Ethel Muriel Thomson-MacPherson privately published a book in 1958 entitled: Genealogical Chart of the Descendants of David Thomson and Mary Glendenning. Ethel undertook to record as many of the descendants of David and Mary Thomson as she could locate. It is difficult to-day for us to comprehend the scope of such a project before the days of computers, Internet and e-mail. Ethel collected her data by "snail mail" and by actually driving around and interviewing people. She compiled her data using a typewriter. Ethel is listed with the descendants of James D. Thomson and also Andrew Thomson. |

Editor's note: Much of the material here in The MacPherson Genealogy has been freely lifted from Robert Sewell's website with some discrete editing. | These pages are essentially copies of that book as reproduced by Mr. Sewell and explained on his website. Ethel started this endeavor long before 1958. As a youth, I can remember hearing my grandmother, Clarissa Anna Sanderson-Robertson, speaking with my mother, Margaret Emily White-Robertson, about whether they should invest the $5.00 that Ethel was asking in return for the promise of a copy of the book when it was published. I can only assume that she needed financing to print her finished handiwork. My grandmother died in 1948, so Ethel endured for a long time indeed, to bring her efforts to market! THANK YOU Ethel for your perseverance and contributions! | ||||

Preface to the First Edition, 1958 For many years it has been my fondest dream to compile a book of the David Thomson Descendants, and as the saying goes "nothing ventured, nothing gained". The descendants are scattered all over the North American Continent, and it has been impossible to contact every one, so this list is far from complete, and there may even be errors in the names and dates. Even though I have done all the writing, typing and talking, much of the credit goes to my husband Hughbert MacPherson, who has willingly driven several hundred miles, and sat patiently in the car for hours at a time, while I interviewed the people for names and dates. Many, many hours have been spent on
this project, but every minute has been a pleasure, and so all good things
must come to an end.

Preface to the Reprint Edition, 2002 The Thomson [MacPherson Version] Genealogy was copied in January 2002 using Scansoft’s optical character recognition programme "TextBridge Pro 9.0" and Microsoft’s "Word 2000". These pages were set up using "Netscape Composer". I am not a Thomson descendant. Lionel and Shirley Thomson (mentioned under the descendants of Richard Thomson) are my mother’s cousins. Lionel and Shirley’s mother, Irene Furse, was a sister of my grandmother, Margueretta Furse. The original 1958 book was loaned to me by Lionel Thomson’s wife Mary Helen Thomson (née McGarry). I have learned a great deal about using
optical character recognition programmes by copying this book, and I hope
that the result helps Thomson descendants trace their ancestry.
